Description

This homemade baked beans recipe is a rich, hearty dish with tender beans simmered in a sweet and savory sauce. Perfect for barbecues, potlucks, or a cozy comfort meal, these baked beans are way better than canned! You can make them in the oven or slow cooker for a versatile and delicious side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried navy beans (or 4 cups canned beans, drained and rinsed)
  • 6 slices Beef, diced (optional)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups water or chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beans:

    • If using dried beans, rinse and soak them overnight in water. Drain and rinse.
    • Cook the beans in a large pot of water until tender, about 1 hour. Drain and set aside. (Skip this step if using canned beans.)
  2. Sauté the Beef and Onion:

    • In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, cook the diced Beef over medium heat until crispy. Remove the Beef and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pot.
    • Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes until soft. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Make the Sauce:

    • Add the brown sugar, ketchup, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir well.
    • Pour in the water or chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
  4. Combine and Cook:

    • Add the cooked (or canned) beans and Beef back into the pot. Stir to coat the beans with the sauce.
    • Cover and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. For a thicker consistency, remove the lid for the last 15 minutes.
