Ingredients
Scale
For the Crust
- 1 cup cold butter (unsalted or salted based on preference)
- 1 cup brown sugar (can be substituted with coconut sugar for a refined-sugar-free option)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (gluten-free flour can be used for a gluten-free version)
For the Caramel Pecan Layer
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk (no substitutes recommended)
- 1 cup pecans, chopped (swap with walnuts for a different nut flavor)
- 1 cup brown sugar (for caramel mixture)
For the Topping
- 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk; replace with dark chocolate for a more intense flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare Crust: In a mixing bowl, combine cold butter, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour. Mix them until the mixture becomes crumbly. Press this crumbly mixture evenly into a baking dish lined with parchment paper.
- Pre-Bake Crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the crust in the oven for 10 minutes until it is set but not browned completely.
- Make Caramel Pecan Mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, and chopped pecans. Stir the mixture constantly for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and starts bubbling.
- Add Caramel Layer: Pour the hot caramel pecan mixture evenly over the pre-baked crust. Spread it out smoothly to cover the crust layer.
- Bake with Caramel: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes or until the caramel layer is set and bubbly.
- Add Chocolate Topping: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Spread the melting chocolate into a smooth, even layer using a spatula.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the Turtle Bars to cool completely at room temperature so the layers can set properly. Once cooled, cut into 12 squares and serve.
Notes
- You can substitute coconut sugar for brown sugar for a refined-sugar-free option.
- Gluten-free flour works as a substitute for all-purpose flour if needed.
- Walnuts may be used instead of pecans for a different nutty flavor.
- Use milk or dark chocolate chips depending on your flavor preference.
- Make sure the caramel mixture is stirred constantly to prevent burning.
- Cooling completely is essential to prevent the bars from falling apart when cut.
