Description

This Easy Taco Skillet is a quick and flavorful one-pan meal perfect for busy weeknights. Ground beef cooked with taco seasoning combines with black beans, salsa, and melted cheddar cheese, then finished under the broiler for a bubbly, golden cheese topping. Served with sour cream, fresh cilantro, and crunchy tortilla chips, this dish delivers all the classic taco flavors in a convenient skillet form.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped

Seasoning and Add-ins

  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning (or more to taste)
  • 14 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 16 ounces salsa (your favorite variety)

Cheese and Garnishes

  • 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • ¼ cup sour cream (for serving)
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • Tortilla chips (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef: Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for about 2 minutes, breaking it up as it cooks. Once browned, remove the meat from the skillet and set it aside.
  2. Sauté the onions: Return the skillet to medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook for about 5 minutes until they become translucent, stirring frequently to avoid burning.
  3. Add seasoning and combine: Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Sprinkle in the taco seasoning and stir well to evenly coat the meat and onions.
  4. Incorporate beans, salsa, and cheese: To the skillet, add the drained black beans, salsa, and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Mix everything together so the cheese begins melting into the mixture.
  5. Broil the cheese topping: Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the skillet contents. Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil for a few minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  6. Serve and garnish: Remove the skillet from the oven and serve immediately. Top with dollops of sour cream, a sprinkle of chopped cilantro, and tortilla chips on the side or crumbled on top. Enjoy this hearty and cheesy taco skillet!

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, add extra taco seasoning or use a spicy salsa variety.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Try adding diced bell peppers or corn for extra veggies.
  • If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, transfer the mixture to a baking dish before broiling.
  • Keep a close eye during broiling as cheese can burn quickly.
