Description

Saltine Toffee Squares are a delightful, crunchy treat featuring a buttery toffee layer spread over crispy saltine crackers, topped with melted milk chocolate and festive crushed candy canes or sprinkles. This simple no-fuss holiday dessert combines sweet, salty, and chocolaty flavors in perfect harmony, ready in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40 Saltine Crackers

Toffee Topping

  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar

Chocolate & Garnish

  • 2 cups Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 2 Candy Canes, crushed (optional)
  • Christmas colored sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large rimmed cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray the foil lightly with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single complete layer covering the entire foil.
  2. Make Toffee Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine the unsalted butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, bringing the mixture to a rolling boil. Boil continuously for 3 minutes to create a rich toffee sauce.
  3. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, carefully covering each cracker with the butter and sugar mixture to ensure full flavor coverage.
  4. Bake Toffee Layer: Place the cookie sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. This sets the toffee and helps it meld with the crackers for a crunchy texture.
  5. Add Chocolate Topping: Remove the pan from the oven and quickly sprinkle the milk chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chips sit for a couple of minutes to allow melting.
  6. Spread Melted Chocolate: Using a spatula, carefully spread the melted chocolate into an even layer covering the entire toffee and cracker base.
  7. Garnish and Cool: Sprinkle crushed candy canes and/or Christmas colored sprinkles over the melted chocolate while still soft for a festive touch.
  8. Set and Serve: Allow the entire tray to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate hardens. Once set, cut the sheet into squares and serve.

Notes

  • For best results, use salted crackers for a perfect sweet-salty balance.
  • Butter and brown sugar must boil for the full 3 minutes to ensure proper toffee consistency.
  • If you prefer darker chocolate flavor, substitute milk chocolate chips with semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips.
  • Crushed candy canes and sprinkles are optional but add a festive and crunchy contrast.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
