Scalloped Potatoes Recipe with Cheese Powder: Easy Dish

  • Author: Thomas Culino
  • Total Time: 75 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This Scalloped Potatoes with Cheese Powder recipe is a creamy, cheesy, and comforting side dish that’s easy to make. Instead of traditional shredded cheese, we use cheese powder for a smooth and rich cheese flavor that blends perfectly into the sauce. It’s a great option for busy weeknights, holiday dinners, or potlucks!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Potatoes:

    • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups whole milk
    • ½ cup cheese powder
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • ¼ teaspoon paprika (for extra color and flavor)
  • For the Topping (Optional):

    • ½ cup breadcrumbs
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • 2 tablespoons cheese powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Cheese Sauce:

    • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
    • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
    • Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens (about 3-5 minutes).
    • Add the cheese powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir until smooth.
  3. Assemble the Dish:

    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
    • Sprinkle half of the chopped onion (if using) over the potatoes.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the layer.
    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, and cheese sauce.
  4. Add the Topping (Optional):

    • In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs, melted butter, and 2 tablespoons of cheese powder. Sprinkle over the top for a crispy finish.
  5. Bake:

    • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
    • Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  6. Cool & Serve:

    • Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Cheese powder can be adjusted to taste for a stronger or milder cheese flavor.
  • Try adding cooked bacon bits or chopped ham for extra flavor.
  • Substitute half-and-half for a richer sauce or low-fat milk for a lighter version.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C).
